Your feedback on the use of this B-Board for Pinoydiophiles

Postby vintage_dog » Thu Jan 23, 2003 3:45 pm

Message from Russel as posted in Pinoydiophiles:

Since our formation in April 2002, we've gathered 207 members, 6,000
messages, volumes of reference documents, gobs of pictures, etc.
This has caused us to use:

1--50% of Yahoo! groups allocation for messages
2--98% if Yahoo! groups allocation for files
3--98% if Yahoo! groups allocation for photos

While we are in no immediate danger of getting shut out of Yahoo
groups, it is but wise to plan ahead and:
1--be more cautious in using our current Yahoo! groups resources and
2--start planning for more growth for Pinoydiophiles.

To maximize our current Yahoo! groups resources, I urge all members
to immediately please:

1--Re-visit the photos and files you've posted and delete or re-
size/compress them.
2--Consider alternative locations for files and photos you'd like to
share with the group like www.pbase.com (as Arnold C did) for
pictures and briefcase.yahoo.com for files. You can then post links
ot these files/photos at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Pinoydiophiles/links

As for our message boards, a small number of Pinoydiophiles are
currently testing a Linux-based bulletin board hosting service,
courtesy of a generous gesture by a fellow Pinoydiophile. We will be
mailing invitations for more beta testers within this month in order
to gain experience on:

1--the proposed service's features, user interface, etc.,
2--reliability and latency outside of Manila*,
3--bugs/quirks, etc.

*we do have Pinoydiophiles in the U.S., Singapore, Australia, Japan,
China, and our very own Cebu and Zamboanga.

We will make the appropriate announcements when the group of Beta
testers give their thumbs up on the new board.

Personally, I like BB's because it's easier to follow a particular topic's discussions.

My only concern, which I have posted elsewhere, is how to retain the other features we have in the yahoogroups forum like equipment database, photos, etc.

1. For photos, we can register a "pinoydiophiles" gallery over at pbase and put a sticky note in this BB showing the link to the pbase gallery.

2. For text related database like "useful links", I think a sticky thread approach will also work.

I'd also like to add:

3. If acceptable to the webmaster, perhaps it would be nice if any registered member can start a poll. We have this feature at yahoo. I think here, only the webmaster can do it himself at the moment.

BTW, how many posts before we can have our avatars?

Here's another comment:

4. Do you think it's wise to have a separate sub-forum for members who also sell equip & accessories? The tree structure will look something like this:

Marketplace:

Misc Buy & Sell - for members who want to sell their gear, cds, LPs, etc
-----Software (CD's/LP's etc) - selling software
-----Gear - selling ne & pre-owned gear including tubes, parts etc.
-----WTB - for posting wanted to buy items

Dealers section
-----Sound & Images - anything regarding items carried by Sound&Images
-----Mickey2A3 - " " what Mickey sells
-----Dealer C
-----Dealer D

This is so that the [b]discussion[/] portion of the forum will not get mixed up w/ the buy & sell portion.

Suggestion lang...

Another sub-forum could be:

Music - where discussions & reviews on cd's etc. are taken up

Suggested Sub Forums for Pinoydiophiles

Postby rtsytrsy » Mon Jan 27, 2003 10:46 am

Here's my current thinking on how we should organize the new Pinoydiophiles:

1--Gear & General Audio
2--Set-up and Tweaks
3--DIY
4--Music
5--Events
6--Marketplace/Buy & Sell

Francis and I initially discussed a more comprehensive list (separate forums for speakers, amps, sources, cables, a la Audio Asylum) but feedback is the less forums, the better--easier for members to decide where to put messages.

Administrative matters can be posted as sticky notes in all the above forums.

We'll need volunteers to co-moderate the individual forums. Sorry for volunteering you but:

1--Hansen, I can't think of a better moderator than you for set-up and tweaks.

2--Ike/Ed/John Marco/Grant/ArnoldC, care for moderating the DIY section?

Can you folks suggest mods for gear, music (wag si Audio Tyro, puro Barry Mannilow at Cha-cha marereview, he-he. Maybe Pic Annonuevo?), events, and marketplace?

Thanks!

russel, the moderator does not have to be an expert in the topic. most of the time he/she will be moving posts around, reminding people what to post, rules, etc.

i would like to beg out because i'm already moderating an international forum www.esato.com, dito pa lang dami ng makulit! may away, may politika, may sira ulo, nako sobra! and to mention, the forum is just about SonyEricsson phones! dito kami nagkakilala ni grant

Russel, looks good. Since we have a forum created for "Analog and Tubes" and "Digital and Home Theatre" I suggest we retain these muna and monitor traffic. We can easily fold them into the General Audio later.

This is how it would look like now:

1--General Audio

2--Set-up and Tweaks*

3--DIY

4--Analog and Tubes

5--Home Theatre and Digital

6--Music*

7--Events and Special Announcements*

8--Marketplace/Buy & Sell*

* new

Please PM the list of moderators to me. Who is moderating what forum. There can be more than one moderator per forum, a core group moderating all forums, different moderators per forum, or any combination.

Please provide descriptions for each forum so I can put them on the main forums page.

Gratias Russ for keeping me off the hook. I will be very busy coaching the Philippine Women's Synchronized Swimming Team, so definitely won't have much spare time on moderating role (whatever topic). :D

Really appreciate the "warm" gesture.

ziggyboy/vintage dog,

other forums which i have participated have the following:

1. a facility for printed (text) versions - useful if you are not always online and want to be updated of certain threads via printed matter, download to pda's or transfer to diskettes

2. since there is a facility to override the signature why not override also the avatars - useful for fast viewing and can be nondescript for office viewing :)
